Xavier Carbonell-Estrany

Dr. Carbonell graduated in Medicine in 1968 and earned his PhD in 1990. Since 1969 he has focused his practice on perinatal care, with particular dedication to neonatal intensive care units.

He has led the Neonatal Unit since 1982. From 1984 to 2008 he served as Head of the Neonatology Service at Hospital Clínic - Maternitat, within the Institut Clínic de Ginecologia, Obstetrícia i Neonatologia (ICGON) in Barcelona.

Senior Consultant at the Neonatology Service of Hospital Clínic. Coordinator of the IRIS Study Group (Infant Respiratory Infection caused by RSV). Member of the biomedical research institute IDIBAPS and of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM).

Member of the Ethics Committee of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine (WAPM).

Vice President of the Spanish Society of Neonatology (2003-2007) and Vice President of the Spanish Multiple Pregnancy Society. Board member of the WAPM, coordinating its working groups.

Since September 2007 he has been President-elect of the WAPM and a board member of the “Fetus as a Patient” Society.

Board member of the EAPM. In 2010 he became a full member of the International Academy of Perinatal Medicine. Vice President of Matres Mundi International.

President of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine (2011-2013). Honorary member and Honorary Professor of several international societies and universities.

Awarded the Sir William Liley Medal. Editor of the Spanish edition of NeoReviews (AAP), member of multiple editorial boards, and author of national and international publications on neonatology and respiratory syncytial virus infections.
