Welcome
On 7 July 2008, around fifty experts from across the globe —all members of the International Academy of Perinatal Medicine— presented the New York Declaration entitled “Women and Children First” to the United Nations and its President. The document captured a shared commitment to defending the rights of mothers and children in both developed and developing countries.
That declaration distils my entire professional vocation. Perinatology and Paediatrics seek to care for, protect, and respect the health and rights of mothers and newborns. Throughout my career this has been my guiding objective, present in clinical practice, academic work, and social engagement, and it has profoundly shaped every moment of my personal life.

Dr. Xavier Carbonell
Xavier Carbonell-Estrany, MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine in 1968 and completed his doctorate in 1990. Since 1969 he has dedicated his work to perinatal care and neonatal intensive care.
Awards & publications
Recipient of the Sir William Liley Medal for Perinatal Medicine. Over the past 15 years he has contributed to more than 80 peer-reviewed publications.
